Devlog 23: Come Rain or Shine

I wish I had more times to develop games, even writing this devlog will shorten the distance that separates me from next Monday. Why am I mentioning this? Well, because it's true, but also because this week I finally added this demo to Steam.

I'm not participating on this edition of Steam Next or anything but I thought it would be good for getting new people interested. It turns out I was right which is good, but I would have preferred to spend more time working on the game itself than struggling with Valve's tools and setting up the required assets.

These last 2 weeks I worked on new content, at this rate I think I'll have at least 2 new levels in time for Demo Day 55 which is in line with my usual output, more or less.

When it comes to already finished levels, I have refactored a great deal of the system behind arena stages since a workaround from around 6 months ago was conflicting with another workaround and it was all a mess. I hope this will serve as a powerful weapon for my ongoing war effort against jank.

Pictured below: Stage 11, a significant source of these issues in the past. Also, probably my favorite level in terms of visuals even though it's mostly tiny trees. The tooltips are slightly more centered now as well.

Finally, I've been slowly adding additional animations for some units. It's nothing too special, but if 2 frames can improve something then it's probably worth doing. I'll add more whenever I have time or I'm not sure what to do next. You can see one of them in the picture below.

I also slightly changed the colors and, more importantly, added a clear separation between the UI and the battle proper.

That's all I had for today. In the past I used to excuse myself by writing stuff like "the last 2 weeks were kinda harsh", but I decided to stop when I realized I was writing that every single time, effectively making the pretext pointless because if every week is bad then you should  eventually either die or get used to it.

Anyway, I hope to see you again in 2 weeks.

congrats on the steam demo release!

wouldn't be a bad idea to make a trailer, or at least a video clip to play before the screenshots. you also have a next fest in June which you can sign up soon if you think the game will benefit from that.

how many more levels are planned anyway? with another 2, you already have a surprisingly large amount of content.
