Devlog 33: Viva la Actualización
It took longer than expected, but I can finally say that Afterlife Gladiator is playable in Spanish.
Realistically speaking, this was probably a waste of time since most people interested in small inside RPGs most likely speak English already but releasing a game that's not playable in my native tongue left a bad taste in my mouth.
Localizing a game was a lot harder than I thought. Its been said before but some things can't be translated literally and the sheer volume of text I had to go through was a little overbearing. Afterlife Gladiator's complete story is around 80 pages long, not counting tutorials, bestiary entries, UI text, combat messages, etc.
At least I tend to avoid regionalisms and slang for the most part so that wasn't so bad. English isn't the most distant language from Spanish either thanks to some Norman fellows back in 1066. It's the same alphabet and everything.
This task consumed most of my development time the past 2 weeks, but I also had time to make a few other changes. First of all, I finally came up with a cost for respecs. I think they are fundamental for RPGs since otherwise you can screw yourself far too easily, but if they don't have a cost then the temptation to min-max everything becomes omnipresent, and that's not fun.
Therefore, now each character starts with roughly 1 free respec and earns an additional one every 3 levels. I think that way there's some commitment to each attribute/perk point without making the choice permanent. Also, the screenshot is in Spanish too.
Second, I have made some much needed balance changes to characters that can use warrior spirit skills. These make the unit absorb all damage for a short amount of time and some people were complaining that this made some fights annoying.
Finally, a frankly embarrassingly large amount of small issues have hopefully been corrected.
That is all I had this time. Next update will probably have some more art and maybe some balance changes. One of these days I gotta make the Spanish version of the Steam page and a launch trailer too.
I thank you for reading my devlog, imaginary reader, and I hope to see you again in 2 weeks. You can also follow me if you wish to know when the next one comes out.
