Devlog 06: A small update before Demo Day 50
As the title suggests, this is the last update before Demo Days 50 which is pretty much the same as last DD only the number is cooler.
Nevertheless, I have also spent a more than insignificant amount of time during the past month working on new content which means there isn't that much to talk about in this update but I still made some progress that warrants a little devlog, if only to briefly document what I've been doing.
My coding style is creative to put it nicely so I've been mostly working on that. Months ago, I made my own dialogue system and there were plenty of changes I have been wanting to implement for a time now, especially considering that the total dialog in the game has just exceeded 8000 words.
The system is now much more modular and text data is completely separated from the dialog system. A necessary change to handle so many lines of text. This is the way I should have done it since the beginning but I honestly never thought I would need so much text. I know better now. This doesn't mean much for players but I also made changes to the old dialog box.
Text boxes now look like this, similar to before but with one small addition in the form of 3 buttons for advancing text like one might see in a visual novel instead of the old system. The auto button advances the text every 5 seconds or so and the skip button, well, skips the entire thing. There's a warning before you do, of course.
The other big change is that the demo is now only available up to level 5, or around 1-2 hours of playtime. The reason for this is that complete game at this point is around 2-4 hours long and it will only get longer in the future. The amount of testing I need to do is getting out of hand for an update every 2 weeks and I should be thinking about having a vertical slice of sorts in the near future anyways.
The Demo Days 50 version will be back at full length regardless. At this point I estimate I'll have at least 11 levels finished by then, but I would like to have at least 12.
At this rate I might be able to release the completed game in a few months so that would be pretty cool, if only just to say I actually finished something.
That is all for now, thank you for reading and see you in about 2 weeks for DD 50.
